I’m a creative director and designer based in New Zealand. I work with business owners to turn their ideas into a clear brand, from its identity and packaging to the way it shows up online.

Close to the business.
Close to the work.

My work includes long-term involvement with Rocket Espresso (opens in a new tab) and brand identity for BOX Altitude (opens in a new tab), both businesses with an international reach. I also work with smaller businesses, including label design for The Goode Wine Company and brand identity applications for Ross Plumbing & Gas.

Understand the business. We start with what you do, who you want to reach and what you want to achieve.

Find the direction. I help define what your brand stands for and how it should look and communicate.

Put it into practice. I take that direction through to the work you need, whether that’s an identity, packaging, a website or everyday communications.

You work with me directly. I stay involved in the decisions and the details.

A useful
conversation.

You do not need to arrive with a finished brief. We can start with a conversation about where your business is now and where you would like it to be.

My father, Joe Backhouse, was a furniture designer and maker. Growing up around his work gave me an appreciation for good design and products made with care.

That still influences me. I like work that has a purpose, where the details belong and nothing gets in the way of what matters.

Photography is another part of how I see things. Outside work, I spend time with family and get out on the bike with friends.
